High Blood Pressure

Also known as Hypertension, high blood pressure is marked by an abnormal increase in blood pressure that puts an additional strain on the blood vessels and gradually damages them. A person is said to have high blood pressure if his BP is greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg. The condition can drastically affect the blood vessels that are responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the kidneys. The renal cells are deprived of oxygen and nutrients, which leads to the gradual loss of kidney function. 

What are the different types of Hypertension?
Hypertension is broadly classified into two types:

• Primary Hypertension, which is not triggered by an underlying medical ailment. The underlying cause can be advancing age or unhealthy lifestyle practices. 
• Secondary Hypertension results from an underlying medical condition, such as kidney disease, thyroid problem, or hormonal imbalance. 

What causes Hypertension?
Hypertension or high blood pressure is caused by the increased pressure of blood in the blood vessels, which can be due to any of the following:

• Being overweight or obese
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Unhealthy eating habits
• Having a family history of diabetes
• Having a family history of cardiovascular disease
• High intake of sodium-rich foods
• Excessive smoking and drinking
• Certain underlying medical ailments 

What are the symptoms of Hypertension?

• Edema or fluid accumulation in the limbs and face
• Chest pain and breathlessness
• Severe headaches
• Blurred vision
• Frequent muscle cramps 
• Reduced appetite 
• Nausea and vomiting 
• Frequent urination
• Problems related to sleep
