What Are Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors?
Bone tumors can either originate in the bone itself (primary bone tumors) or spread from other parts of the body (secondary or metastatic tumors). Common malignant bone tumors include osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma. These can be aggressive and often require a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Soft tissue tumors, on the other hand, arise in the connective tissues—muscles, fat, nerves, or blood vessels. While many are benign lipomas or fibromas, malignant soft tissue tumors, known as sarcomas, can grow rapidly and spread to other organs.
Signs and Symptoms:
If any of these signs persist, a thorough evaluation by an Orthopaedics Oncologist is recommended.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Diagnosis involves physical examination, imaging (X-rays, MRI, CT scans), and biopsy to determine the nature of the tumor. Biopsy should always be done by a specialized Ortho-Onco Surgeon . Treatment depends on the type, size, location, and spread of the tumor. Limb-sparing surgery has become a preferred option over amputation in many cases, thanks to medical advancements. Reconstructive procedures, bone grafts, and prosthetics are also commonly used.
Why early detection matters?
Catching bone or soft tissue tumors early can significantly improve treatment outcomes and preserve quality of life. Orthopedic oncologists play a critical role in offering specialized care tailored to each patient's needs.
