Injuries that can affect your shoulder

Injuries are not always the result of a trauma or accident. There are several different factors that may be responsible for it. Shoulder injuries, for instance, can be due to repetitive motions, overhead movement or excessive strain which can be caused by indulging in certain physical activities and sports. There are several different types of shoulder injuries, categorized on the basis of how they affect your shoulder and the part that is involved. In this blog, we have elaborated on some of the most common types of shoulder injuries with the help of experts from the best orthopedic hospital in Gurgaon. These are listed below:

  • Shoulder dislocation - You are quite likely to have a shoulder dislocation if you forcefully rotate your shoulders beyond the normal range. This is marked by the popping out of the ball joint, which is present at the top of the upper arm bone, from the socket, that forms a part of the shoulder blade. In extreme cases the deformity is visible, and you can easily make out that to shoulder has come out of its place. However, some patients may not see any visible signs but rather feel symptoms like intense pain, restricted range of motion, swelling and numbness. If you suspect a shoulder dislocation, it is important to avoid any unnecessary movement and immediate medical intervention to avoid further damage.
  • Shoulder separation - Unlike shoulder dislocation, shoulder separation does not involve the ball and socket joint, but rather the AC joint. AC stands for acromioclavicular joint, which connects the collar bone and blade of the shoulder. You are quite likely to have a shoulder separation if you receive a direct blow to your shoulder which could be due to a fall or blow. This forces the collar bone out of its normal position, resulting in the formation of a tiny bump. A mild shoulder separation is characterized by a sprain, whereas serious injuries can involve tears too.
  • Rotator cuff tear - Characterized by persistent pain, that aggravates when you lie down, rotator cuff tear is one of the most common shoulder injuries in adults. The rotator cuff is a very important group of muscles that helps in stabilizing the shoulder and control its movement. Such injuries are more common in athletes and people who indulge in activities that call for the need for repetitive movement. People about the age of 40 also fallen the high-risk group. In such cases, rotator cuff tear is possibly due to overuse of the shoulder joint caused by age-related wear and tear. The best orthopaedic surgeon suggest that one can also suffer rotator cuff tear if one lifts heavy objects or fall directly on your shoulder.
  • Frozen shoulder - It is a condition marked by the freezing of the shoulder. Freezing in the sense that you are not able to move your shoulder due to extreme stiffness and pain that tends to get worse with time. The condition is also referred to as adhesive capsulitis and is more common in people lying in theage group of 40 to 60 years. Experts from the best hospital in Gurgaon suggest that the limited range of motion is a result of the buildup of adhesions or abnormal tissues, that hinder the free movement of joints.
  • Shoulder impingement - It is a syndrome that is caused by the excessive rubbing of the rotator cuff between the shoulder joints, due to which its tendons get pinched. It is an extremely painful condition marked by inflammation and swelling.

Shoulder injuries can be easily managed with timely medical intervention and proper care. You need to consult a doctor as soon as you suspect an injury and get yourself assessed at the earliest.
